Arturia is expanding the MiniFreak family with MiniFreak 49, a larger-format hybrid synthesizer built for players who want the sound-design range of MiniFreak with a full-size, four-octave keyboard and a more immediate performance surface.

A larger MiniFreak for hands-on playing

MiniFreak 49 pairs 49 full-size, semi-weighted keys with velocity and mono aftertouch. The Arturia-designed keybed is joined by aluminum pitch and modulation wheels, a larger OLED display, and the new XYZ multitouch matrix for deeper real-time control.

The result is a MiniFreak designed to feel at home in a studio, onstage, or at the center of a hardware performance setup—while retaining the compact, exploratory character that defines the instrument family.

Dual digital engines and analog filters

At the center of MiniFreak 49 are two digital sound engines, six voices of polyphony, and more than 30 oscillator modes. Engine 2 can operate independently or process Engine 1, opening a path from straightforward layered sounds to more complex cross-engine textures.

Dedicated shortcuts provide faster access to synth, wavetable, and sample-based sound sources. External audio can also enter the voice architecture, allowing the instrument’s modulation and filtering system to become part of a broader studio or performance rig.

Each voice is completed by a polyphonic analog state-variable filter with low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass modes. The filter can self-oscillate, and its cutoff can be modulated at audio rate from either sound engine for more aggressive FM-style timbres.

The XYZ multitouch matrix

The new XYZ multitouch matrix brings several important workflows into one interactive surface. It can act as a visualizer, display and edit modulation assignments, speed up preset browsing, or become a hands-on performance controller through Freak Control mode.

Freak Control supports macro, gate, spice, bipolar, and vector-style layouts, with latching behavior available when a gesture needs to remain active. That makes the matrix useful for animated sound design, evolving transitions, and expressive performance without requiring constant menu navigation.

Modulation, sequencing, and performance tools

Two LFOs support free-running, tempo-synced, and custom-drawn shapes. A polyphonic cycling envelope can operate in Run or Loop modes and extend into audio rates, giving each patch multiple ways to move over time.

The integrated sequencer includes four modulation tracks, while the arpeggiator adds octave jumps, ratchets, repeats, and Arturia’s Spice & Dice variation tools. Voice Panning can spread the six voices across the stereo field, adding width and motion to pads, sequences, and layered performance sounds.

Three effect slots provide access to 13 algorithms per slot, making it possible to build complete sounds inside the instrument before they reach an external mixer, interface, or pedal chain.

MiniFreak V integration

MiniFreak V is included for DAW integration, preset management, and software control of the hardware. Players can work with the instrument from a computer when arranging or organizing sounds, then return to the physical panel for performance and hands-on editing.
