Jico J44-7 and Impact Cartridge Reviews

It’s now been five years since Shure discontinued their M44 cartridges. Japanese manufacturer Jico have made replacement styli for them for a long time, but now their latest range also includes replacements for the carts themselves, an upgraded nude stylus, and a whole new cart designed by Toshi Nakama from Vestax.

Just when you thought you’d seen it all, MicroFreak evolves once more. The V5 firmware introduces user sample importing, a sample playback engine, 3 new granular engines, enhanced envelopes, and more – for free.

Sample Import & Playback

That’s right: MicroFreak can now do samples!

Import your own samples, play them back, and loop them for classic sampled textures with a Freaky twist. Samples can be up to 24 seconds long in 16-bit / 32kHz / mono format, with a total of 3.5 minutes’ worth of total sample storage space.

Granular Engines

3 granular engines for wild audio manipulation

Going a step further, MicroFreak’s V5 firmware will introduce Scan Grains, Cloud Grains, and Hit Grains, 3 new engines that explore slices, textures, and impacts via granular manipulation of your imported samples.

Keyboard Random Source

Yeti Out is a music collective and transient think tank that bridges east and west with its series of pop-up raves and record releases. The speaker unit contains a bio-cellulose diaphragm made from bacterial cellulose, an organic compound grown using certain types of bacteria. Dekoni x Hifiman – Cobalt Closed-Back Dynamic Headphone

Dekoni’s latest project has brought forth the Cobalt – a high end dynamic driver closed-back made in partnership with Hifiman. Made with their latest driver technology and masterfully tuned by our own engineer, the Cobalt is the culmination of everything that makes listening great.
The Cobalt driver makes use of a carbon-coated diaphragm, engineering in such a way that the carbon coating can be placed anywhere on the driver. This allows for an incredible level of fine-tuning of the driver, and gave us the perfect starting point to build the rest of the headphone around.
During our testing, we experimented with placing different materials behind the driver in the earcup – the results showed the headphone responding strongly to any changes, and trended towards a decrease in soundstage in exchange for a deeper bass response.
We also made use of the thick padded headband offered to us by Hifiman – ensuring an even amount of pressure across your head.
Last to be created was our specialty – the earpads. We experimented with multiple styles using our Elite Series materials and high density memory foam, and had each style tested by our team. In the end we decided on the Fenestrated Sheepskin pads – the combination of comfort, breathability and resulting sound was the winner for the team.
Of course, we didn’t stop there – our engineer also created a unique set of Elite Velour pads, offering further enhanced comfort and an alternate tuning more to his preference. These Elite Velour pads will be included with the first 1000 units of the Cobalt – giving you the full Dekoni experience.
